In 2016, a silver 2p that was almost discarded as a fake after it was discovered in a charity collection tin sold at auction for £1,350 – almost 70,000 times more than the actual value of the coin. Like the George V penny above, these three pence coins were also pattern coins – a coin not approved for general release instead made for the purpose of seeing how a coin design might look.
